"Amma, What does the rain-fly like the most? Darkness or light?"
I put down my cutting knife to look up. My learning algorithms immediately sensed encounter. I knew the gun was fully loaded and there was no escape route.
"Amma, did u hear me? Do these rain-flies like darkness or light, more?", my 5-year old repeated.
"Hmm.. I has to be light. Look how they are attracted to our tubelight during night! Don't you see this!" I cautiously shifted to defense mode and waited for the next bullet.
"So where do they go during daytime?"
"Well, I guess they would be roaming about somewhere outside." I replied putting on my thinking hat.
"Really ?!!" He wasn't very convinced.
"No, Wait!". My high-school biology lessons suddenly came to my rescue (or betrayal). "These insects likes to spend their mornings in their holes (nests). They come out usually during night, that is why you don't see many roamers around".
I felt a surge of victory. This time its going to be different. I smiled.
"OK. Isn't it dark in their holes in the mornings?" asked my little innocent soul.
*Pause*
"So Amma.... does these rain-flies like light or darkness more?"
Disarmed & knocked out as always. Peace!
Food for thought : In some sense, we too are like those rain-flies. We fail to appreciate the sunshine around us.....hiding in our self-created holes. When the sun goes out, we get attracted to fakes..letting ourselves burned. Look around. The world is full of joy for those who wish to see. Appreciate those little things that makes life truly worth living. Once in a while pause and ask yourself,
"What do you like more, light or darkness ?"
